Welcome to Tonka
Tails Oberhasli Dairy Goats!
We began raising
goats in Colorado in 1986. In 1988, we moved to Minnesota with four
pregnant Nubian does. Once in Minnesota, taking over a former cow
dairy farm, the herd blossomed. Attending a show in 1991, an Oberhasli
breeder, Karyl Dronen, expressed frustration at not having the
Oberhasli breed sanctioned because she was the only exhibitor. Karyl
was walking a kid, one of triplets, at the time. Dave and Peg offered
to have a "few" Oberhasli and bring them to shows to have
the breed sanctioned. That kid was the foundation doe for the Tonka
Tails herd. She was Body Shops Cherry Angel Cake, 1995 National
Champion. Since the first Oberhasli came onto the old dairy, they have
taken over and finally pushed the last Nubians out in 2000.
Herd name origins
are always fun to decipher and Tonka Tails is no exception. The farm
sits close to Lake Minnetonka on the west edge of the
Minneapolis Metropolitan area. The Tonka Truck factory is just down
the road, although not still functioning. It was Dave's idea for the
name, thinking of the Canterbury Tales and changing the wording
slightly. But, the old English theme was kept and many of the goat
have names with an old English theme.
The herd has been
attending National Shows since 1991, has been on test since moving to
Minnesota in 1988 and has been appraised almost every year.
